Upper Wharfedale

Tuesday 29 December 2004. The annual attempt to walk off Christmas over eating resulted in a visit to Hubberholme and a walk up to Cray and back.

Many Bingley students will remember this part of the world after visiting Buckden House.

The 13th Century church at Hubberholme is charming with those little carved oak mice and a beautiful old Tower.

Walking east towards Cray. Buckden Pike rises up with snowy top and the going looks good, but a glance to the right and you can see how things change quickly (see below).

Kirk Gill Moor is a mess of sleet and cloud. The light suggests late afternoon but the time is only 11.30am.

No hope of getting onto high fells today

A path leaves the road and follows the course of Cray Gill.

Limestone layers and much rain produce roaring waterfalls.

Looking back towards Hubberholme you can see Horse Head Moor in the distance and Kirk Gill Moor on the left.

Climbing higher, trees struggle to survive amongst fierce winds and elements.

Returning is a bit of a downhill slide. The sleet and drizzle get through everything and hang drippingly on trees.

Nearly back to the car now. Buckden in the distance. A thoroughly fine damp trudge. Makes you realise how warm is so good.
