College Centenary : Sunday 24 May 2009

In 2009 it will be one hundred years since the college Foundation Stone was laid by Walter Runciman, 1st Viscount Runciman of Doxford (President of The Board of Education 1908 - 1911) on 24 May 1909. There will be various events over that weekend in Bingley so make a note. More details to follow soon.

The centenary falls neatly on a Sunday so a weekend of celebrations is more than likely. If you have any ideas please let me know and/or put them in the Guestbook.

Bingley College ~ The Book

Acland Hall resident Alan Cattell and I are writing a book about Bingley College. We are keen to hear from people who are able to contribute stories, artefacts, anecdotes and photos of the college. Please get in touch if you have something of interest.

It would be really good for the book to be a celebration of everyone connected with Bingley since the laying of the foundation stone in 1909 to it's present situation as a mainly residential development.

Any photos of college events and happenings can be emailed to me or sent by post to John Harvey, 31 Lower Edge Road , Elland. HX5 9PL for me to scan. I promise to look after any photos sent and return in fine condition.

John Harvey ~ Bingley College Student 1974-77

In January 2007, It was a joy to have a chat with Tom Price (right) who was Dean of Students 1973 - 1979. He was instrumental in promoting Outdoor Activities in his time at Bingley and encouraged, the then Principal, Ray Stirling to appoint Pete Livesey as a lecturer in the Outdoor Pursuits department.

At the time Pete was at the forefront of British kayaking and rock climbing and as Tom describes: "To get him on our staff, I said, would be akin to getting Nurehev in one's ballet company...."

Tom also recalled a Bingley College climber who he never got to know:- "That was the one who put the Christmas tree on top of the dome of the main building's clock tower..... Seconded by Dennis Gray, who lived nearby at Guiseley, I made the second ascent and took it down, finding the route greasy with industrial grime. I was glad to be able to prise the lightning conductor away sufficiently to get my fingers behind it, and I should certainly not liked to do it solo, in the dark, even given the Dutch courage of a few pints of beer. I fully expected the name of the culprit to come out sooner or later over the grapevine, but it never did."

Tom's philosophy of the simple approach and having fun comes out strongly in his book Travail So Gladly Spent, published by The Ernest Press in 2000. It tells of his active life spent climbing, canoeing, camping, skiing and exploring.

His book fills you with enthusiasm for life in the outdoors and there are many tales to tell about travels in The Lakes, The Alps, Antarctica, Scotland, Lesotho and the Canadian North West Territories.

The sketch of penguins and quotes above, left are both taken from Tom's book.

A Special Thank You ~ Most of the photos on this page would not have appeared without the help of Cathie at the The Telegraph and Argus who ran an article asking for anyone connected with Bingley College to get in touch.
The group above was taken in May 1965 and is part of a photo of all college staff and students sent in by Dorothy Pitch. Let me know if you were at college at this time.

The above photo of the victorious It's A Knockout Team was sent in by John Wilson (PE 1975-78). Note the placard. John sent about twenty photos which I am presently scanning for display and inclusion in the book. You're a star John!
