Jimi Hendrix played Bingley, I mean Ilkley in 1967 |
In the Sixties and seventies lots of bands played Bingley College. Here are some
reminiscences. More welcome. especially photos. |
|
| Alan Brett remembers:- Whilst I was staying at Ilkley for the first 2 terms of 1967, Jimi Hendrix appeared at the Troutbeck Hotel. My mates and I listened to him outside in the car park. We couldn't get in as it was packed out! Check out the link at:- Jimi Hendrix |

Alan would also like to know if anyone can add to this list of bands and that appeared up at college during the 60s and 70s:- Buffy St Marie ~ Joan Baez ~ The Spinners, Cliff Hall actually stayed overnight with my room mates me in Priestley Hall ~ Dave Swarbrick ~ Victor Brox Blues Train with Zacharius and his Phonographic ~ Cylinders, poster for them was displayed in my room when I was billeted at Stoney Lea Hotel, Ilkley with my room mate Roy 'Cally' Calvert...whatever happened to him.

| John Harvey ~ I remember Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee appearing in the early seventies.
See Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee with Pete Seeger on Rainbow Quest. |
| Kathy Burgin ~ I can add Magna Carta to the list of bands that played at college, sometime in the mid seventies. Thinking about that has reminded me that the only record they ever seemed to play at discos in the bar was Silver Machine, by Hawkwind. |

| During 71-74, Barclay James Harvest performed in the main Hall, for 150 quid. They finished at midnight due to a curfew. A couple of years ago I interviewed the band live on BBC World Service ... they couldn't remember the Bingley gig. See them do Mockingbird in 1992. |

|
Scaffold including Mike McGear (Sir Paul McCartney's brother), performed in the Drama Studio.

 |
Argent also performed a concert on a Thursday night. They watched themselves on Top of the Pops in the Union TV room prior to the gig... "Hold your head up." Listen to the long 1972 version of the song on YouTube. Heavenly... |

| Rob Taylor was the Social Sec at the time. He would be able to supply lots of music/concert info. Rob, if you're out there, please come forward with your memories |
