Cars were treasured and rather rare amongst students in the early seventies. They were invaluable for trips to Bradford for curry at 1am or giving lifts to others up the very steep Park Road.

Steve Jones recalls his arrival at Bingley in September 1974 and then going off on Phase 3:- “Gary Owram and I bought this van for £5.00! Hence it was called Not Bad For A Fiver, and went up to the Dales. How seven of us got in this I can't remember, what I do remember is it overheating going up the hills and when we eventually got to Hawes. It was a relief that it was market day and the pubs were open all day! I don't even remember the focus (educational jargon) of the week, or how long we stayed in Hawes.”
