College Song

Can all musicians play this tune and send your recordings so I can prepare a disc for distribution.

The College Song was written by Miss Morton, education lecturer and warden of Acland, when she produced a Masque of Education in 1914. In a letter to the College Magazine in 1945 she wrote:- "I adopted a song of Ben Jonson's in the course of adapting masque called the Golden Age Restored, to serve as the foundation of a Masque of Education.

This Masque of Education was twice performed at College ~ once on 23rd May 1914 by the second year elders, and once by the the first year students on 23rd June 1914. On this last occasion, Miss Wodehouse took the part of Bingheleia, the Spirit of College. Egeria is the spirit of the Future in Education.

The College Song concluded the Masque. As to it's composition; the first line is a direct quotation from Miss Wodehouse's speech at the official opening of the college in 1911. The last line of the verse is Ben Jonson's."
